What is GST in Australia?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000 by the Howard Government to replace a range of state and federal taxes.
Businesses registered for GST must charge GST on most goods and services they sell, and can claim credits for the GST included in the price of business purchases. GST registration is required if your annual turnover is $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profit organisations).
How to Calculate GST
To add GST: Multiply the price by 1.1 (or multiply by 0.1 and add to original price). Example: $100 ร 1.1 = $110 (GST inclusive)
To remove GST: Divide the price by 1.1 (or multiply by 1/11). Example: $110 รท 1.1 = $100 (GST exclusive)
